Name
Land parcel cultivated for the production of a crop.
Definition
Target population
All area cultivated with crops.
Variable
Definition
For cereals, dry pulses, root crops, industrial crops and plants harvested green the areas refer to the area under cultivation. Area under cultivation means the area that corresponds to the total sown area, but after the harvest it excludes ruined areas (e.g. due to natural disasters). If the same land parcel is used twice in the same year, the area of this parcel can be counted twice. For vegetables the area refers to the harvested area. For many vegetables the cropping time is short so the same area can be used several times per year. For this reason the harvested are can be much bigger than the physical area (main area). For permanent crops the area refers to the production area. All non-productive areas are excluded (e.g. young non-productive plantations, abandoned areas, etc.).
Measure
Sums of areas (cultivation/harvested/production) of land parcels cultivated with crops.
Unit

Subgroup to C Root crops

crops: D Industrial crops
Industrial crops, which are normally not sold directly for consumption because they need to be industrially processed prior to final use.

crops: D.1 Oilseeds
Subgroup to D Industrial crops. Mainly Rape and turnip rape seeds and Linsseeds (oilflax) are grown in the Nordic countries.

crops: D.2 Other industrial crops
Subgroup to D Industrial crops. Includes Fibre crops; Tobacco; Hops; Aromatic, medicinal and culinary plants; Energy crops n.e.c. and Other industrial crops n.e.c.

crops: E Plants harvested green from arable land
All arable land crops harvested ‘green’ as whole plant and intended mainly for animal feed, forage or renewable energy production, namely cereals, grasses, leguminous or industrial crops and other arable land crops harvested and/or used green.

crops: E.2 Leguminous plants harvested green
Subgroup to E Plants harvested green from arable land

crops: I Other arable land crops n.e.c.
This class includes only crops of low economic importance and contain only crops that cannot be classified under any other item. This crop is reported in 'Main area' only.

crops: Fallow land
Hectares of all arable land either included in the crop rotation system or maintained in good agricultural and environmental condition (GAEC), whether worked or not, but with no intention to produce a harvest for the duration of a crop year. Fallow land is reported in 'Main area' only.

crops: Permanent grassland
Land used permanently (for several consecutive years, normally 5 years or more) to grow herbaceous fodder, forage or energy purpose crops, through cultivation (sown) or naturally (self-seeded), and which is not included in the crop rotation on the holding. Permanent grassland is not arable land. Permanent grassland is reported in 'Main area' only.
